175 Days to Love Chicago: My Chinatown: Stories from Within

My Chinatown: Stories From Within

Go behind the beautiful architecture of Chinatown and hear stories that illuminate its vibrant past and present at the opening day of the Chinese-American Museum of Chicago’s My Chinatown: Stories from Within, our 175 Days to Love Chicago pick for Saturday, April 21.

Take part in a day of openings and reopenings on Saturday, April 21, at the Chinese-American Museum of Chicago. First, it’s the inaugural day of My Chinatown: Stories from Within! Created in collaboration with the Chicago History Museum and first displayed there, you can now enjoy the multimedia experience My Chinatown, which tells the personal stories of people who live in the neighborhood, keeping its traditions alive, in Chinatown itself.

The voices of My Chinatown tell the story of the neighborhood’s past and present, providing an insider’s view of culinary delights and traditional medicine, the powerful role of family and business associations, and the celebration of the Chinese New Year.

The exhibit has been expanded at the Chinese-American Museum of Chicago to include a more intimate look at the artifacts and histories of several prominent families (including the Lees, Wongs and more).

Next, witness the epic journey of immigrants from China to Chicago and see a brick from the greatest wall ever built at the reopening of Great Wall to Great Lakes: Chinese Immigration to the Midwest.

Finally, make sure to spend some time at the ongoing Chinatown Centennial 2012 exhibition, which marks Chinatown’s remarkable first one hundred years as a neighborhood, while celebrating its next century and bright future.

See My Chinatown: Stories from Within and the other exhibitions mentioned above at the Chinese-American Museum of Chicago‘s Raymond B. & Jean T. Lee Center (238 W. 23rd St.) from April 21 – December 31, 2014. (Tuesday – Friday, 9:30 am – 1:30 pm; Saturday & Sunday, 10 am – 5 pm; CLOSED Monday. Suggested donation: adults $5; students/seniors $3.)
